Oxford Old Mill project helps
high school students earn college credits and gain valuable entrepreneurial
experiences
A project to reopen and run the Oxford Old Mill as a specialty
restaurant, gift shop, and a venue for fine and performing arts
will provide a unque and exceptional opportunity for Oxford High
School students.
When
Superintendent of Oxford Schools, Dr. Deb Hamm, came to Oxford in 2006,
she visited the old mill. "When I saw the old building,
I was just enthralled," said Hamm. "I started thinking about
how our students could benefit from being able to use this wonderful
piece of history only two blocks from the school in a real-world way
through entrepreneurship," Hamm said.
Lisa Roberts, director of business industry and entrepreneurship at
Cowley College, is helping create a program where Oxford High School
students can earn college credits while working on the Old Mill project. “It’s
all about networking,” said Roberts. “…I think we
have developed a great ‘best practice’ learning opportunity.
The students will have a hands-on experience where they can actually
see, touch, taste and feel how a business runs.”
Oxford students will design an overall business plan to give them a chance
to develop skills related to managing their own business. Students will
develop marketing, financial and personnel skills and have the opportunity
to earn college credits for courses while earning money working outside
of school.
Many Oxford classes will be involved in the process of development. Business
classes may help in advertising, marketing, creating paper menus, Web
page and merchandising with the Old Mill logo. The Family and Consumer
Science classes will take part in marketing and merchandising and menu
preparation. Agriculture classes might be responsible for outdoor landscaping,
decking and water-life and other maintenance. The FFA may take part in
raising livestock such as cattle and hogs to supply meat to the restaurant.
Welding classes can assist in gates, fences, swings and outdoor tables.
Art students would be allowed to display and possibly sell their work.

Cowley College grows into
Winfield
The Center for Technical Excellence in Winfield was created
thanks to a partnership between Cowley College and Winfield
Economic Development Incorporated.
Lisa Roberts, Cowley College director of business
and industry, is excited about what this means in terms of promoting
economic development in the county. "Not only does it reflect our commitment
to make sure we are providing industry driven solutions with education,
but also pulling education and training together to make sure it facilitates
overall opportunities for economic development," Roberts said. "Who
knows what will spring out of here, with the minds of the high school
students and current employees? Given an opportunity to let loose with
the tools in front of them, the possibilities are endless." read

or not
By JAMES JORDAN Traveler Editor
Some say that Arkansas City is drying up and blowing
away. But is it?
That could depend on perception as much as it does on reality.
Lisa Roberts, director of business and industry at Cowley College,
said "our perception is reality." She explained that often when people
see something happen that they care about, they assume it is happening
everywhere.
"So, if someone sees a store they shop at close, they assume that closings
are happening everywhere," she said."It may not be what is true, but that is
how it feels to them." read
