The Kansas Institute for Technical Excellence (KITE) exists as a collaborative effort between Cowley College, Butler County Community College, Hutchinson Community College and the Wichita Area Technical College (WATC). KITE was founded with the mission to provide customized training and technical education in a non-duplicative and coordinated fashion to the citizens and businesses of the region.
KITE was organized in 2002 with the formation of the KITE operating board consisting of the presidents of the four participating institutions. The four institutions serve more than 17,000 students and together comprise the largest educational institution in Kansas.
The two-fold charge given to each of the institutions is first, to become a national leader in the development and delivery of customer-driven customized training for regional businesses and second, to develop four world-class education “centers of excellence” in the areas of aviation, information technology, manufacturing and healthcare education.
Cowley College, as a partner in the KITE initiative, holds the center of excellence in aviation education. Cowley’s programs in Airframe and Powerplant mechanics as well as Avionics and non-destructive testing, demonstrate our expertise and dedication to the training and development of the Workforce for the aviation industry.
Wichita, Kansas and the surrounding region has a history that is closely
tied to the aviation industry. Walter Beech, Clyde Cessna, Lloyd
Stearman and Bill Lear, the founding fathers of Boeing, Bombardier
Aerospace, Raytheon Aircraft, Cessna, as well as numerous supporting
industries and businesses have all called the region home. Aviation
is our heritage, and continues to be our legacy. Cowley College
is dedicated to continuing that proud, strong tradition.
KITE mission: to contribute to the economic development of the region and state
of Kansas by engaging stakeholders in the education and training that produces
a world-class Workforce.
KITE vision: to become the national leader in meeting all Workforce development needs through a collaborative endeavor that attract and trains people at a world-class level in a world-class facility.
